TRIP CHECK: GET READY FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Americans Hit the Road

A RECORD-BREAKING TRAVEL WEEKEND

More than 42 million Americans are expected to travel for Memorial Day this year, marking a notable increase from last year and making it one of the busiest Memorial Day weekends on record. In total, 42.3 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from their homes over the Memorial Day holiday weekend (known as the unofficial start of summer) from Thursday, May 25, to Monday, May 29, according to AAA. That represents a 7 percent increase — or 2.7 million more people — compared to the same time period in 2022.

More than 37 million Americans will hit the road and road trips will see a 6 percent increase compared to 2022. The increase is spurred by lower prices at the pump, with a gallon averaging about $3.54 nationally, according to AAA. Last year, the average was more than $4 per gallon over the holiday weekend. Travelers who are driving and want to beat traffic should avoid heading out on Friday, May 26, which is expected to be the busiest day on the roads. The least crowded driving days will be Saturday and Sunday while the best times to drive are in the mornings or after 6 p.m.

WHERE ARE PEOPLE GOING?

AAA booking data for the Memorial Day weekend shows tourist hotspots like Orlando, New York City, and Las Vegas are top domestic destinations. Cruise port cities in Florida and Alaska, as well as Seattle, are high on the list given the 50% increase in domestic cruise bookings compared to last year. Other popular U.S. cities this Memorial Day include Denver, Boston, Anaheim, and Canton, Ohio – home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

FURRY FRIENDS

Part of the joy of a road trip is that you have the option to bring your furry friends along. Use a no-spill water bowl that attaches to the back of your car's headrest to make sure they stay hydrated. Plan to stop at restaurants with patios where your pet can join you, and don't ever leave your pet alone in the car. Inside temps can rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in just a few minutes. At the end of the day, relax and unwind in a pet-friendly hotel.

SAFETY TIPS

If you are planning to drive any distance over the holiday weekend, make sure your vehicle is ready for the road. Check fluid levels—oil, windshield wiper, freon—and make sure tire pressure is correct. Pack a first aid kit, snack bag and plenty of water. Be sure to make use of GPS or apps like Google Maps or Waze, and include a mobile charger for your phone in your car. Do not drive when tired or impaired.

No matter how prepared and careful you are, accidents can still happen. If you are involved in a traffic accident over Memorial Day Weekend, contact an experienced personal injury attorney right away. Remember to take pictures of any property damage, and get names and contact information for any witnesses to the accident. Be sure to get a copy of the police report. Document any and all required medical treatment due to the accident. Property damage, medical and rehabilitation costs, lost wages and loss of future earning potential, pain and suffering and emotional distress are all compensable damages.
