Tips For Elevator Safety

Last year in Decatur, Alabama, a 41-year-old man was killed in a horrific accident involving an elevator in a hospital. The man was on staff as a maintenance worker and had been working on repairing the elevator when the elevator came down on him. At this time no one is completely sure what was the cause of the accident, but there is a continuing investigation going on to determine what exactly happened.

Horrific elevator accidents like the one above are fortunately pretty uncommon. In fact, given the frequency of elevator usage all over the country, the occurrence of even less harmful accidents is somewhat rare. However, significant and unfortunate accidents happen and when they do, the resulting circumstances can be tragic. Such was the case of a New York advertising executive whose death was caused by the negligence of several elevator mechanics. According to at least one news source, the accident was at least partially caused by the decision of the mechanics to override an important safety system. Due to the mechanics negligence the advertising executive was dragged between the elevator and a wall when the car started rising with the doors open as she tried to get in.

Elevator accidents are frequently caused by the negligence of others however there are a few things you can do to try to proactively prevent injuries:

  • Wait until the elevator door has completely opened before stepping on or off of the elevator.
  • Look at the floor before stepping on or off of the elevator. Often times slips can occur due to wet surfaces, but these sorts of accidents can be avoided sometimes by simply paying attention to your surroundings.
  • Similarly, look and make sure that the elevator has properly aligned with the floor before stepping on or off of an elevator. Amongst elevator accidents, it is common for misalignment to occur and to result in particularly harmful falls.

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. With elevators in particular, these accidents can be very painful and sometimes even catastrophic. In order to understand what has happened it is important to look at the circumstances surrounds the accident and determine whether or not the negligence of another party is to blame.
