Holidays are always a wonderful time to get together with family and to blow off some steam. However it's important to be careful when it comes to using fireworks. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) determined that on average 200 people per year go to the emergency room from fireworks related injuries in the month around July 4th. Interestingly, the same study also noted that 68% of those injured were male and only 32% were female.
The CPSC offered up the following tips regarding firework safety:
- Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks
- Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying our using them.
- Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
The holidays always tend to be a time where people get together to relax. It's important to remember to continue to use common sense in order to make sure that no one gets injured.
