The Importance Of Avoiding Distractions While Driving

As the use of cell phones has become ubiquitous with modern life, the very real risk of danger associate with texting and driving has become more prominent than ever. Georgia's legislature responded to these concerns when it enacted texting and driving bans, which took effect on July 1, 2010. By now most people are familiar with these dangers, however, according to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety cell phone dialing, talking and listening causes almost an equal number of crashes each year.

The reason that texting and driving proves to be so dangerous is that it distracts the driver from the primary task at hand: driving. The Governor's Office reports the following:

  • Reaching for a moving object increases crash risk by 9 times
  • Looking at an object outside the vehicle increases crash risk by 3.7 times
  • Reading increases crash risk by 3 times
  • Grooming or applying makeup increases crash risk by 3 times
  • Using a hand-held device like a GPS increases crash risk by 3 times
  • Talking or listening to a hand-held cell phone increases crash risk by 1.3 times
  • Drowsiness increases crash risk by 4 times

Unfortunately not everyone recognizes the inherent risks associated with these sorts of distractions. If you've been injured in an accident it is important to look at whether or not one of these sorts of factors was involved. If you suspect that someone hit you while distracted it's important to tell your attorney. Typically an investigation can reveal phone records that may be able to clarify the situation, and ultimately lead to the recovery that you deserve.
